The Vernon Department of Economic Development is busy preparing for a pair of events as part of its outreach. On March 28, there will be an opportunity for local business owners to network and share ideas, but also to talk about their recent accomplishments. Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately said businesspeople can make announcements including that a business is coming up on a notable anniversary, that they have a new product line, or just hired several new employees.

“It can be something to allow them to be recognized,” Gately said. “It could be something as simple as ‘We survived the recession.’ It’s going to be open networking and recognizing the attendees.

Gately said invitations were being sent to all registered businesses in Vernon, but other companies who do business in Vernon are also welcome, as are businesses planning to move to Vernon.

A Vernon Job Fair is also in the planning stages, and will likely take place in May. Businesses are invited to provide input for the event.

“The format is still being worked on,” Gately said. “We want to make it successful and worthwhile for the local businesses, so if you’re going to participate and there is something you’d like to see, then you can let the organizers know and they can incorporate it.”

The Economic Development Department will also be hosting another “brokers’ showcase” in October, which will invite companies, developers and real estate professionals, and will include what town and state programs are available for assistance.

Gately said the Business Recognition will hopefully become an annual event. It is sponsored by Image Works and Key Hyundai, and will take place at Key Hyundai’s location at 21 Hartford Turpike, at 6 p.m., on March 28.
